Feeling unwell? What you must do if you need to miss classes and information on your OSHC – Health Insurance

What do I need to do if I will miss classes because I am unwell?

While you are studying in Australia you may not get sick the whole time you are here. However, there is a chance that you may come down with a cold or other illness, or an injury that prevents you from attending your classes. If you are unwell and cannot attend classes you must see a doctor who will be able to check how serious your condition is and provide you with a medical certificate if you unfit for attending classes.

- If you cannot attend classes you must see a doctor and request a medical certificate. A copy of this medical certificate must be given to your program coordinator (but always keep the original for yourself).

 OSHC – Health Insurance

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is health insurance that is designed to cover the costs of medical and hospital care that you or any family members accompanying you may need while in Australia. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) requires all student visa holders to have OSHC for the duration of the visa. If your OSHC is nearly expired you need to make sure that you renew it. Details on how to renew OSHC Worldcare can be found below.

When you see a doctor or medical specialist in Australia, you will usually be required to pay a fee. However, as you long as you have current OSHC you can claim back some or even all of the money that you have been charged, so make sure you keep your receipts.

OSHC providers like Worldcare also have medical providers that provide direct billing services. Direct Billing for Worldcare customers means that if you hold a current OSHC Worldcare policy and attend one of the doctors or specialists listed on their website that indicate that they ‘Direct Bill’ under additional notes, the bill will be sent directly to OSHC Worldcare and you will not have to pay or submit a claim. Different OSHC providers may be affiliated with different medical centres and medical professionals, so check on the relevant website if your OSHC provider is not Worldcare.
