Love of English leads to teaching TESOL
Peggy Aeschlimann's love of the English Language has given her the momentum to complete Chisholm certificate training which has impacted greatly on her life and the lives of the many Australian migrants that she teaches.
"Over the past decades I have given several vocations a berth including computer programming and dolphin research. None of them was the perfect fit."
Peggy got her inspiration to teach English as a second language while overhearing an experienced teacher talk enthusiastically about his job at a Christmas party.
"I was inspired and at the same time thought … I can do that and so began to hunt around for appropriate courses. It was meant to be as the Chisholm Course flyer was delivered to my mailbox within days of my decision and I enrolled in the Certificate IV in TESOL course at Chisholm."
Peggy completed her teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) course at Chisholm Institute in March 2007.
In June 2007, three months after completing the Certificate IV in TESOL course, Chisholm Institute offered her work as an emergency trainer which has since developed into sessional teaching in the English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) Department.
"Teaching English as a second language is all that I envisaged and more. The Chisholm ELICOS trainers gave us excellent induction training which I credit for giving me the right mind set to find the successful style of teaching I have finally adopted."
"Chisholm's superb training techniques gave me the knowledge to form my own precise teaching style which explains and educates individuals on the intricacies of English. This includes common sense, grammar and teaching methodology (both theoretical and practical) blended to create an intense and satisfying four week course."
"My own teaching style is somewhat humorous …I know that most of my students miss their own family members often in another country. So I have become a den mother which I mix with my own brand of humour and skills into a kind of teaching performance."
Peggy says that with her certificate course under her belt and the support of the ELICOS team, making the transition from student to employee has been the most fulfilling stage of her working career.
"Finding my training niche at Chisholm has given me job satisfaction that up until a few years ago, I could only dream about."
